Beware of fraudulent emails referencing CDC-sponsored State Vaccination Program

December 2, 2009, 10:12 am

CDC has received reports of fraudulent emails (phishing) referencing a CDC sponsored State Vaccination Program.

The messages request that users must create a personal H1N1 (swine flu) Vaccination Profile on the cdc.gov website. The message then states that anyone that has reached the age of 18 has to have his/her personal Vaccination Profile on the cdc.gov site.

The CDC has NOT implemented a state vaccination program requiring registration on www.cdc.gov. Read more.

UHS to hold large vaccination clinic this Friday

December 1, 2009, 9:12 am

As complaints of influenza-like illness (ILI) reported to University Health Services dropped to a record low for the semester, UHS announced plans for a large-scale H1N1 vaccination clinic to be held this Friday at the SERF (Southeast Recreational Facility).

Twelve students were evaluated at UHS for influenza-like illness (ILI) between Nov. 22 and 28, a week that included the Thanksgiving holiday. Two percent of visits to the primary care clinic were for ILI.

UHS has recently received 4,000 doses of vaccine against H1N1 influenza (aka “swine flu”). All registered students age 24 and under are now eligible for vaccination.

The clinic will be held Friday, Dec. 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. No appointment is needed, just a valid student ID. The SERF is located at 715 W. Dayton St. Read more »

ILI cases decrease heading into Thanksgiving; Vaccine now available to students 24 and under

November 23, 2009, 3:11 pm

Cases of influenza-like illness continue to decrease at University Health Services as campus heads into Thanksgiving weekend.

In addition, H1N1 vaccine is now available at UHS to registered UW-Madison students who are age 24 and under, pregnant, have a “high risk” medical condition, are a caregiver to an infant less than 6 months of age, or are a health care worker.

In Week 12 of the fall semester (Nov. 15–21), UHS evaluated 35 students for influenza-like illness, down from 46 in the previous week. ILI encounters made up 2.6 percent of all primary care visits, again the lowest percentage since the semester began.

“We are seeing some positive signs on H1N1 and are hopeful that these trends will continue through finals,” says UHS director Sarah Van Orman. “To make it happen, we encourage everyone to receive H1N1 vaccine, either this week or upon their return to campus after the Thanksgiving Holiday.” Read more »

Public Health targeted community H1N1 vaccination clinics expanded

November 17, 2009, 4:11 pm

Update from Public Health Madison-Dane County: The clinic held Tuesday, Nov. 17 has been running smoothly and there is little to no waiting time for H1N1 vaccine. Since there is still plenty of vaccine available the clinics will be expanded to include:

• Pregnant women, children 6 months through 4 years, and people who live with or care for those less than 6 months.

• Anyone with an underlying health condition, with no age restriction (children and adults).

Clinics are located at the Exhibition Hall, Alliant Energy Center and are:

• Open until 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17

• 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18

This is a great opportunity for free H1N1 vaccinations, especially for preschool children. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Gates to the Alliant Energy Center will open 30 minutes before the clinic opens. There will be no early admittance. Read more »

ILI cases at UHS fall steeply in Week 11

November 17, 2009, 10:11 am

In Week 11 of the fall semester (Nov. 8–14), University Health Services evaluated 46 students for influenza-like illness, 69 fewer than in the previous week. ILI encounters made up 2.8 percent of all primary care visits, the lowest percentage since the semester began.

“This drop is consistent with the current downward trend in both state and national rates,” says UHS epidemiologist Craig Roberts. “It could mean that the outbreak has peaked, or it could be that cases will start going up again. At this point, no one can really say. Flu is strange that way.”

“Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like we’ll be resupplied with H1N1 vaccine before Thanksgiving,” says Sarah Van Orman, M.D., executive director of University Health Services, “so we can’t offer it yet to all students.” Read more »
