Downward trend in flu cases at UHS continues in Week 4

September 29, 2009, 5:09 am

For the second week in a row, the number of students contacting University Health Services (UHS) about flu-like symptoms declined.

In week 4 of the semester (Sept. 20–26), UHS evaluated 94 students with influenza-like illness (ILI), down from 168 students the previous week. ILI encounters represented 7.1 percent of all visits to the primary care clinic.

“To put that in perspective, this is the level we would expect to see at the peak of a typical flu season,” says Craig Roberts, UHS epidemiologist. “About 6 or 7 percent of primary care visits would be for ILI.” Read more »

Influenza-like illness reports from UHS for the week ending Sept. 26

September 29, 2009, 4:09 am

Every Tuesday, University Health Services (UHS) will post summary statistics about cases of influenza-like illnesses (ILI) seen in its clinic during the previous week. These numbers represent surveillance data only and are a useful marker for measuring the extent of influenza illness in the campus community. This is not to be considered a comprehensive count of all illness on campus.

Seasonal flu shot options available for students, faculty, staff

September 23, 2009, 6:09 am

Many local health care providers and community clinics have started offering vaccinations against seasonal influenza — the “regular” flu shots that many people get every year.

Seasonal flu shots do not provide any protection against the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus that has been linked to the current outbreak on campus. However, they are formulated to be protective against other strains that may circulate later this year.

To limit the spread of disease in the community, all faculty, staff and students are encouraged to get a seasonal flu shot every year.

On Sept. 21, University Health Services (UHS) began offering free seasonal flu shots for all registered UW-Madison students. Flu shots are available without an appointment from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday on the sixth floor of 333 East Campus Mall, and on selected dates in certain residence hall locations. For more information, including a complete schedule of satellite clinics, click here.

Seasonal flu shot clinics for UW-Madison employees will be provided at 12 campus locations beginning Monday, Nov. 3, and running through Friday, Nov. 14. Download the full calendar of campus clinics (PDF). Read more »

Feeling down with flu symptoms? Take it easy this weekend

September 12, 2009, 7:09 am

Every team gets a set of pre-game instructions from its coach, and today Badger fans are receiving theirs from a new source.

Officials at University Health Services (UHS) are reminding students to take a break from the festivities of a home football weekend in the event they are experiencing flu-like symptoms such as fever with a sore throat or cough.

However, if you’re feeling healthy, there’s no reason not to enjoy a Badger game day as you normally would.

Since Sept. 1, cases of H1N1 influenza have increased on campus and UHS Director Sarah Van Orman, M.D., says it’s important for students who might be ill, or recuperating, to think of their own health and the health of others this weekend as they make weekend plans. Read more »
